Down Time, Talk Time

Decent Prevention of Date Rape

“According to the U.S. Bureau of Justice, statistics show that 90 percent of college rape victims knew their aggressor prior to the attack. (Fulginiti, Janine. 1.)”   Date rape, also known as acquaintance rape, involves coercive sexual activities that occur against a person’s will by means of force, violence, duress or fear of bodily injury.  Women are more prone to date rape than men. It is also the most unreported crime on college campuses. Although this is easier said then done, date rape could easily be avoided if men and women followed simple rules and became aware of certain signs and surroundings.

Anyone can help prevent date rape.  There are a few specific ways that men can contribute to the cause.  First, don’t be the guy who thinks a woman saying, “no” means “yes” because they are under the influence of drugs or alcohol, “no” means “no” (“Men: Preventing Date Rape”). If they want you, they will make it perfectly clear that they do in one form or another.  Second, for on campus situations, if there is a stranger roaming about the area that looks suspicious, take note of this and inform the university police or security.  In doing so, this may have just saved the life of a woman.  Third, if a woman is at risk or heading that way, one should get involved.  Pay attention to the simple signs of a woman’s body language saying, “no” and if a man is pressuring or forcing a woman to do something she doesn’t want to (“Men: Preventing Date Rape”).  Lastly, in group situations keep an eye out for one another and have each other’s backs; be a decent person and watch out for anything that may seem out of place.

Women are more prone to date rape then men.  Therefore, women should be fully aware of their surroundings and drinks.  Beware of the people that one is with.  Also, having a few defensive classes under one’s belt probably would not be an awful idea.

As the majority of rapes take place when a girl is under the influence of alcohol or has been drugged (Fulginiti, Janine. 1.) one should never put their drink down nor accept a drink from a total stranger.  You should be mindful of the possibility of someone putting drugs in your drink.  Also, do not get inebriated to the point of memory loss, unintelligible thinking, or foolish actions. Bad things happen when you least expect it.

Being completely sensible to one’s surroundings is probably the most common sense thing women could do.  Especially at any party one attends and plans to get inebriated at, make sure trustworthy friends are nearby that will be able to look out for you and any possible “suspects.”  If one is surrounded by men unknown to one’s self be sure to stay in close-proximity to known people, particularly at parties.  In any case, being aware of creepy guys, where one’s drink is, and where one’s friends are is the simplest way of preventing rape.

Date rape is preventable.  Use common sense and stay aware of your surroundings.  Follow the rules I explained: pay attention to any suspicious people, be mindful of date rape signs, and learn some defensive skills.  These are some of the best ways to prevent date rape. Let’s help to decrease date rape on college campuses and everywhere in between.
